A huge canvas Goya painted in 1814 for the Spanish government (together with its companion piece, The Second of May) to leave no doubt about the horror of the Peninsular War. It shows the French reprisal for the uprising of the day before: civilians from Madrid shot on the hill of Príncipe Pío. You can see it at the Museo del Prado.
