Home of the UK Parliament, rebuilt in Gothic Revival style by Charles
Barry and Augustus Pugin between 1840 and 1876, on the remains of the
old medieval palace that burned down in 1834. Pugin, a devout Catholic
and obsessive about Gothic, designed every last door handle; Barry took
care of the overall plan and made the pieces fit. The Elizabeth Tower,
with the great bell (“Big Ben”) inside it, is one of the most
recognisable sights in the world.
