Oil on canvas, 81 × 65 cm, painted in Arles in September 1888 in the
Place du Forum. The gaslit terrace, the customers, a waiter, the cobbled
street and a blue sky full of stars painted as yellow blobs. It hangs in
the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, in the Netherlands, which holds the
second-largest Van Gogh collection in the world.
Van Gogh had been in Arles for seven months and was painting without a
pause: in those months he also made the Sunflowers, The Yellow House and
The Bedroom. This is the first time he painted the night outdoors, with
the easel set up in the street.
