Temple to Athena Parthenos on the acropolis of Athens, commissioned by
Pericles after the victory over the Persians. Built in Pentelic marble
between 447 and 432 BC by the architects Ictinus and Callicrates, with
Phidias supervising the sculpture. Its Doric columns swell very slightly
(entasis) to correct an optical illusion: if they were straight, they
would look pinched in at the middle.
