Oil on canvas, 207 × 308 cm, painted by Seurat between 1884 and 1886 and now in the Art Institute of Chicago. Parisians on a Sunday on the island of La Grande Jatte, in the Seine: strollers with parasols, a man in a top hat, a girl in white in the middle, rowers in the background. All of it made of small dots of pure colour, the method Seurat called chromoluminarism and everybody knows as Pointillism.
It is the painting that opens Post-Impressionism. Its companion is Bathers at Asnières, the opposite bank painted two years earlier. Seurat died at 31 and left barely half a dozen large paintings.
