Probably the most famous painting in the world, and the one that
disappoints most people, because it turns out to be small once you have
finally pushed your way through the crowd at the Louvre. It is thought to
portray Lisa Gherardini, wife of the merchant Francesco del Giocondo.
Leonardo worked on it on and off for some fifteen years and never handed
it over to the client; he took it with him to France instead, where King
Francis I ended up buying it.
