Anonymous, 12th century

Romanesque · chronological order 3

Twelfth-century wall paintings covering the vault and the arches of the Royal Pantheon of San Isidoro in León, burial place of the kings of León. They show scenes from the life of Christ (Annunciation, Last Supper, Crucifixion, Pantocrator) and a farming calendar with the work of each month. They survive almost intact because the room is underground and because nobody ever restored them heavy-handedly. The nickname (Sistine Chapel of the Romanesque) comes from how much is packed in and how well it has lasted.
