Central panel of an altarpiece painted in 1333 by Simone Martini with his brother-in-law Lippo Memmi, for one of the side altars of Siena cathedral. It shows the moment the archangel Gabriel tells Mary she will be the mother of the Messiah, with the words “AVE GRATIA PLENA DOMINUS TECUM” set between the two figures in raised gilt lettering. It hangs in the Uffizi in Florence.
